“Food Freedom! Are you ready for it?” This is how the adorably blunt, yet entirely endearing sisters, Serene and Pearl, start out their new book Trim Healthy Mama Plan. Within minutes of reading their “easy-does-it approach to vibrant health and a slim waistline,” you are comforted that this is not your typical ‘diet’ plan. Obviously many quick-to-be-skinny fads claim they are ‘lifestyle’ based, but when put to the test, it becomes near to impossible to sustain and you end up sinking the ship in a basket full of fries (dang it!). Enter the Trim Healthy Mama philosophy:
…you won’t focus on restricting food groups or calories. You will focus on fueling your body every three to four hours…If you have weight to lose, you’ll focus on one primary fuel at a time in your meals. If you don’t have weight to lose and want to maintain weight, you’ll combine fuels in what we call Tandem Fueling.
There are two primary fuel sources that your body uses:
- Glucose (Carbs)
Your body needs both of these primary fuels…however…something incredible happens when you focus on these two fuels individually rather than combined: Natural weight loss.
Your body does not burn both fats and carbs at the same time…If you focus on one primary fuel at a time, you will burn through the fuel provided. After that your body must look around for something else to burn. It is given no choice but to switch directly to the task of burning your own adipose tissue (body fat). (Um…that’s awesome!)

So the two important fuels as I mentioned above are Satisfying and Energizing fuels. The Trim Healthy Mama Plan categorizes their meals according to these fuels – either S (Satisfying), which focuses on Fats or E (Energizing) which focuses on healthy carbs.
The idea is that you can have either an S meal or an E meal, and always to space them about 3 hours apart. “This ensures that higher glycemic loads in E meals will not be digested along with the higher fats in S meals, which causes Tandem Fueling.” It is imperative to note both of these meals are always centered around protein.
In addition to either your S (Fat) or E (carb) + protein, you will also include Fuel Pulls, which are non-starchy veggies, berries, or dairy.
The Trim Healthy Mama Plan lays out their approach in detail with answers to burning questions like what type of sweetener to use (stevia), is coffee okay (yes!), do I have to count calories or points (no!), can I have a glass of wine (yes!), plus many more…but I figured I’d cover the super important one’s first. :)
The Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook ($27.99) is a supplement to the book and with over 350 ‘Eat Up and Slim Down’ recipes it is totally worth it. From ‘Cream of Sweet Stuff Soup’ to ‘Asian Sesame Tofu Toss’ to ‘Peanutty Trim Freeze’, it was hard to narrow down what to try first. Obviously…I chose dessert first…you know just to get my feet wet and make sure I liked their methods. Um…yeah I’m sold. So good.
