That damn workout rut. It’s harddddddd to come back from it. Whether you took a few days, a few weeks, or maybe even a few years off…finding the motivation to workout can seem unattainable. Those days where you craved a really good sweat have been replaced with too much Netflix (guilty!), overbooked schedules and let’s be honest…wasted time on Facebook. The result? You feel awful. You’re tired, bloated, and more than likely, not as happy as you’d like. I’ve gone months of having a solid routine, feeling fit, feeling healthy, and then just a week vacation can derail my entire groove. Coming back is hard. We can do this. You can do this. Here’s how…
First step. Get a workout buddy. I’ve said this time and again. The best thing I ever did (besides marrying my husband and having two beautiful girls) was introducing myself to other women at the gym. What started as ‘gym friends’ quickly turned into best friends. I live for my tribe and almost 5 years later, we’re still going strong. We support, we encourage, we push one another. On days we just want to skip, we know we have someone waiting for us. Accountability is pretty powerful.
Try something new. If your gym routine is feeling stagnant, it’s time to mix it up. Get creative. Try a new class, go outside, explore ways to be active that actually interest you. There are thousands of ways to sweat – maybe you just need to find a new method. Personally, some days I love running, other days I want to lift. The goal is to just move.
Give yourself 30 minutes. If squeezing in an hour to workout seems impossible, set a goal of 30 minutes. Just get your foot in the door and start something. Maybe running 3 miles sounds really overwhelming, aim for 1. When you start to feel the endorphins, it’s likely you’ll push yourself further. Or at least you’re laying the groundwork for next time.
Set realistic goals. If you’re working out to lose weight or gain muscle and are dying to see results. I have one word for you – patience. I know it sucks (trust me!!!)…but I promise if you keep at it, change will happen. Most likely the moment you’re ready to give up, it’s just around the corner. Eat clean, workout and get plenty of sleep…you will reach your goal. I’m actually going to bet you will surpass your goal. Stay with it. Remember, we can do this. I’m here with ya.
Have fun. Yesterday I took a SoulCycle class for the 2nd time ever. The instructor mentioned to me after class that she loved how I smiled through the entire 45 minute ride. I told her I was having fun! Don’t get me wrong, the class was not easy, but the music paired with her motivation made it absolutely amazing. It is entirely possible to smile and sweat at the same time. Remember that.
Get new gear. Let’s be real, clothes bring confidence. A new pair of running shoes, leggings, or even a sports bra can do wonders with motivation. Dress the part and you’re halfway there.
I hope you’re feeling motivated again! I’ll be sharing recaps of my workouts on Insta Stories – so make sure to follow along → @Obsessedbyportia!
